Havilah Initiative for Technology and
Development

Building Technology That Works for Everyone

Who We Are

A technology-for-development initiative bringing together seasoned experts in AI, data science, and international development to build digital solutions that genuinely improve lives.

What We Do

We design and deploy data systems, artificial intelligence applications, and digital platforms for health, education, agriculture, governance, and social services in developing contexts.

Our Focus

Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Southeast Asia—regions where the gap between technological potential and on-the-ground reality is greatest, and where thoughtful innovation can have transformative impact

What Sets Us Apart

We don’t just build technology—we build capacity. Every deployment includes knowledge transfer, every platform prioritizes local ownership, and every solution is designed for the challenging realities of low-resource environments

Technology has revolutionized how billions of people live, work, and connect—but not everyone. The digital revolution has largely bypassed the world’s poorest and most vulnerable populations, not because these communities lack need, but because the technology sector hasn’t adequately prioritized their contexts.

We exist to change that.

Havilah Initiative was founded on a simple but powerful conviction: the communities facing the world’s hardest development challenges deserve the world’s best technology. Not hand-me-down systems. Not oversimplified tools. But sophisticated, cutting-edge solutions designed specifically for their needs and realities.

We envision a world where technology serves as an equalizer rather than a divider. Where a community health worker in rural Uganda has access to AI-powered diagnostic support comparable to what a physician in London uses. Where a smallholder farmer in Bihar receives personalized agronomic advice through their basic mobile phone. Where data drives better policy decisions that actually improve lives.

We’re building toward a future where emerging technologies—artificial intelligence, machine learning, big data analytics—are deployed responsibly and equitably in development contexts, with the same rigor and sophistication they receive in commercial applications, but with guardrails that protect privacy, ensure fairness, and maintain human dignity.

We’re motivated by the gap between what’s possible and what’s actual. We’ve seen firsthand how the right technology, deployed thoughtfully, can multiply human potential. We’ve also seen how poorly designed or inappropriately applied technology can waste resources, create new problems, and undermine trust.

This dual awareness—of both technology’s promise and its potential pitfalls—shapes everything we do. We’re neither techno-utopians who believe apps can solve poverty, nor cynics who dismiss digital tools as irrelevant to development. We’re pragmatic builders who understand that technology is a tool, nothing more, but that in skilled hands, tools can build remarkable things.
